About Us

Who we are

Alamance Strings offers Suzuki Violin and Cello Lessons in Burlington, NC. Lessons are available for students ages 4 and up. Lesson times are available during the day and after school.

Lessons at Alamance Strings are available to anyone desiring instruction. Our students represent families, schools, and communities all across Alamance County brought together by music. Alamance Strings supports Dr. Suzuki’s belief that EVERY CHILD CAN!

“Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.” – Shinichi Suzuki

What is the Suzuki Method?

Dr. Suzuki observed that all Japanese children learn to speak Japanese. Without screening for aptitude, children simply learn. Dr. Suzuki applied his observations of language learning to music instruction.

First, a child hears music then mimics pitches and rhythms. Next, the child learns melodic phrases then whole songs. Just as every child speaks before learning to read and write, Students learn to play proficiently before learning notation.

The entire learning process is broken down into manageable building blocks that are learned, mastered, reviewed, and built upon, just like learning a language.

And the most important element? Love. Students learn an instrument in a nurturing environment both at home and at the studio.

All students attend a weekly private lesson with the teacher. Private lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length based upon the student’s age and playing level. Students also attend biweekly group lessons. These ensembles are divided by age, instrument, and playing level. Both the private and group lessons are included in the monthly tuition.

Lesson Location

Alamance Strings is hosted by Burlington Christian Academy. Lessons and most studio activities are held on the BCA campus in downtown Burlington, NC.

Lessons and studio visits are by appointment only.

Enrollment Ages

Alamance Strings currently teaches students from pre-school through retirement age. Lessons may begin as early as 3 years of age; however, most students start between the ages of 4 and 6. The Suzuki philosophy and approach are best suited to these early ages, but all ages are welcome to enroll.

Alamance Strings also accepts transfer students from other studios.

Personal Development

Amy Marsh - Biography

At the age of 7, I began violin lessons with Lorraine Westermark, a Suzuki violin teacher in Wilmington, NC. My involvement in music expanded to community performances with my teacher’s studio, group lessons with other local young violinists, and participation in my local youth orchestra. In high school I joined the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and also began teaching private violin lessons.

In college I had the opportunity to take cello lessons. I loved the rich tone and majestic sound of the cello! I continued private cello lessons and joined the University Orchestra. By my senior year the cello had become my principal instrument. I continued my education on the graduate level with Sharon Gerber and earned a Master of Music degree in Cello Performance. My coursework included string pedagogy for violin, viola, cello, and bass, music curriculum, and string literature. During graduate school, I taught private cello lessons through a local music store in Greenville, SC.

Over the years I have taught students ranging in age from preschool to adult, both beginning and advancing students. My teacher training through the Suzuki Association of the Americas equips me to provide fun, relevant, and advancing instruction to a wide range of students.
